GEMS - HYRIS

Development of Advanced Automation and Digital Tools for the Control and Management of Hybrid Systems Integrating Photovoltaics, Green Hydrogen Electrolyzers and Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems

The GEMS HYRIS – Gas and Energy Management Software for Hybrid Systems project is aimed at designing and developing an intelligent software platform for the integrated management of hybrid energy systems where a photovoltaic plant, a green hydrogen electrolyzer and an electrochemical battery storage system operate and interact. The coordinated integration of these three components represents a significant technological challenge as it requires the ability to manage renewable sources characterized by variability alongside conversion and storage systems with different operating dynamics.

Through the implementation of advanced control logics and optimization algorithms the developed system will be able to monitor and regulate in real time the energy flows between generation, storage and conversion maximizing electrolyzer efficiency and enhancing the use of available renewable energy. In this way the project aims to improve overall plant performance increase operational stability and contribute to making renewable energy and green hydrogen based systems more competitive and sustainable.

Abstract

The growing adoption of renewable energy and green hydrogen represents a key step toward achieving global decarbonization goals. However electrolyzers remain critical systems especially when integrated with intermittent renewable sources such as photovoltaics.

GEMS HYRIS aims to develop advanced automation tools and innovative digital solutions capable of transforming hybrid energy systems into a single integrated and optimized system improving:

  • Operational efficiency
  • System stability
  • Integration between generation and storage
  • Economic competitiveness of the solution

The project fits within the green and digital transition context contributing to the development of advanced technologies for the manufacturing and energy sectors.

Technical Description

Electrolyzers powered by intermittent renewable sources often operate under non-optimal conditions reducing efficiency and competitiveness. Currently integration between photovoltaics, batteries and electrolysis is mostly managed through separate control systems with limited capacity for joint optimization.

GEMS HYRIS introduces an innovative approach based on:

  • Integrated digital architectures
  • Predictive management algorithms
  • Advanced control logics for multi-asset systems
  • Data analysis for dynamic performance optimization

The project’s distinguishing feature is the transformation of a set of independent plants into an integrated energy ecosystem managed by a single software intelligence capable of balancing generation, storage and energy conversion.
